Fractions

Thursday in class we learned about fractions. A fraction is a order pair of integers that look like this ( 1/2), sometimes the numbers are writen one number above another. The top number represents the numerator and the secound number represents the denominator. The most common use of fractions involve (The part to whole concept). For example:

All the circles are a whole but when you color half of the circle, you now get 2 halfs of the 1 whole circle which is written 1/2 as pictured above. The same operation would be done for the 1/3 circle an the 3/6 circle. Some teachers use fraction strips that represent the same concept as the circles. We learned that when adding fractions you have to find the same denominator, so you would look for the LCM of the two numbers.Than you would multiply the two fractions numerator and the denominator by the factors that make the LCM.Than you would add the two numerators and the two denominator together for your answer.

  1. I think you did a good job of explaining in words the key things we need to know about fractions. The picture also helps to see the concept of wholes.

  2. I like how you talk about the part to whole concept. I feel like in class people struggled more with the circles than they did with the fraction bars. It's difficult to look at fractions in these ways. Especially when dealing with division... Most of us want to simply multiply by the reciprocal.

  3. I would have to agree with Lacey (above) It was much harder (for me) to understand the concept with the circles, and with the fraction bars I found it a lot easier. I have never really been great at fractions though, so that could also play into why I did not get the circle example as much

  4. Nice job of explaining what a fraction is and each part of it: a numerator and denominator and them breaking it down with the fraction circles.

  5. Everyone says that the part to whole concept is the easiest, but i think that it was the hardest!! I like the fraction strips because they actually had labels on them to tell you what size they were supposed to represent. I liked your post because I can read what you mean and then i can see the picture!

  6. I totally agree with the other comments about your explanation of fractions. I especially like the fact you included the fraction circles in your post. I am definitely a visual learner and this picture served as an exceptional visual aid.
