All the circles are a whole but when you color half of the circle, you now get 2 halfs of the 1 whole circle which is written 1/2 as pictured above. The same operation would be done for the 1/3 circle an the 3/6 circle. Some teachers use fraction strips that represent the same concept as the circles.We learned that when adding fractions you have to find the same denominator, so you would look for the LCM of the two numbers.Than you would multiply the two fractions numerator and the denominator by the factors that make the LCM.Than you would add the two numerators and the two denominator together for your answer.
